Athletic Achievement (2014)

Mark Ashman is a St. Marys native and 1996 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School. Mark distinguished himself with record-setting basketball careers at Memorial High School and the University of Dayton, and playing professionally before returning to the area to coach basketball at the high school and collegiate levels.

In three years on the Roughrider varsity basketball team, Mark Ashman scored a school record 1,194 points. His MHS career scoring record still stands as of this date in 2014. Mark also set the MHS career rebounding record, which has since been broken. He averaged 10.5 points per game as a sophomore; 19.5 points and 11 rebounds per game as a junior; and 26.8 points and 12.9 rebounds per game as a senior, and shot 72% from the field during his senior season.

Mark Ashman's junior year achievements were recognized by his being named 1st Team All Western Buckeye League, 2nd Team All District and Honorable Mention All State in Division II. His senior year, Mark was honored by being selected 1st Team All WBL; and he was named the WBL Player of the Year, the Northwest Ohio Player of the Year and he was selected 1st Team All State in Division II. Mark Ashman was named the 1996 Division II Player of the Year by the Ohio Basketball Coaches' Poll.

Ashman's basketball dominance continued at the University of Dayton. A four-year player for the Flyers, Mark never missed a start in 119 games, setting a school record for consecutive starts that stood for ten years. He had season averages of 8.6, 11.7, 15.2 and 13.1 points in his four seasons for the Flyers, and averaged 12.2 points in his career. His career total of 1,449 points is 20th in U.D. history. 

Mark earned the team's Most Valuable Player award his junior and senior years. He was the Flyers' co-captain his senior year. He was the team's leading rebounder his junior and senior years and led the team in blocked shots for three consecutive years. Mark Ashman is fifth in career blocked shots at U.D. with 96 overall. He was selected 3rd Team All Atlantic 10 Conference his junior year and 1st Team All Atlantic 10 Conference his senior year. In his final game at U.D., Mark scored 16 points in a one-point loss to Purdue in the 2000 NCAA Tournament, the first time in ten years the Flyers had advanced to the tourney.

After graduating with a bachelor's degree in Communication Management, Mark Ashman participated in the European Basketball League in Champagne, France, and went on to play basketball professionally for the Sioux Falls, South Dakota “Skyforce,” in the Continental Basketball Association.

Ashman continued his basketball career by serving as men's varsity basketball assistant coach for the Memorial High School Roughriders. He went on to become the head coach of the Wright State University-Lake Campus Lakers men's basketball team, a position he holds to this date.

Mark Ashman was inducted into the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011, one year after fellow MHS Alumni Hall of Fame inductee Damon Goodwin received the same honor.



For his outstanding achievements on the basketball courts of Memorial High School and the University of Dayton, Mark Ashman is inducted into the St. Marys Memorial High School Alumni Foundation Hall of Fame, for Athletic Achievement.
